"Still I Rise": GCCS Celebrates Black History Month

Today GCCS held an assembly in honor of Black History Month. Our assembly was titled “Still I Rise” after the poem by Maya Angelou and took inspiration from the poem’s message of triumphing over adversity. All of our students, from kindergarten to fifth grade, helped celebrate the achievements, history, and culture of African Americans through dance, song, poetry, and spoken word performances. We are inspired by the accomplishments of African Americans and by the creativity and passion of our students and staff!

Hoy GCCS celebró una asamblea en honor del Mes de la Historia Afro-Americana. Nuestra asamblea se tituló como el poema de Maya Aneglou, "Still I Rise" (Todavia me levanto), que projecta el mensaje de triunfar sobre la adversidad. Todos nuestros estudiantes, desde kindergarten hasta el quinto grado, ayudaron a celebrar los logros, la historia y la cultura de los afroamericanos a través de la danza, la canción, la poesía y las presentaciones actuadas. Building a Stronger Community with the 32nd Precinct

The police officers of the 32nd precinct visited our school to throw a pizza party! The officers also spoke to our 4th graders about bullying prevention and awarded GCCS with a certificate of appreciation. Thank you to Ms. Washington and Ms. Abanto for organizing this event and thank you to the officers of the 32nd precinct for working together with our school to build a stronger community!

¡Los oficiales de policía del recinto 32 ° visitaron nuestra escuela para auspiciar una fiesta de pizza! Los oficiales también hablaron con nuestros estudiantes de 4to grado sobre la prevención del acoso y otorgaron a GCCS un certificado de agradecimiento. Gracias a la Sra. Washington y a la Sra. Kindergarten Sings to Celebrate "Who We Are"

Kindergarten had a pajama breakfast party to celebrate the completion of their summative assessment for the PYP theme "Who We Are." Our kindergartners have been studying the way "traditions contribute to a family's culture and to an individual's sense of self" and have expressed what they've learned through a dance led by Ms. Panzica and a song led by Mr. Hughes. Thank you to all of the families and staff that made the event a great success and shared their culture by bringing in homemade breakfast foods!

Kindergarten tuvo una fiesta de pijama con desayuno para celebrar la finalización de su evaluación sumativa para el tema PYP "Quiénes somos". Nuestros estudiantes de kindergarten han estado estudiando la forma en que "las tradiciones contribuyen a la cultura de una familia y al sentido de uno mismo" y han expresado lo que han aprendido a través de un baile dirigido por la Sra. Panzica y una canción dirigida por el Sr. Hughes. Gracias a todas las familias y el personal que hicieron del evento un gran éxito y compartieron su cultura al traer alimentos caseros para el desayuno.
 

Architect Phil Freelon speaks to our students

Last week GCCS welcomed a very special guest, Phil Freelon, architect of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Mr. Freelon spoke to our students about inspiration, creativity, and how to achieve their dreams. We are honored and inspired by Mr. Freelon’s visit.
